There are a number of very old companies from Boston USA the first is the Paines Patio Fine Casual Outdoor Furnishings from their website:-
"Way back, in 1835, Leonard Shearer formed the Paine Furniture Company, Boston at the time was a city of just 75,00 people, Andrew Jackson, President and Texas was still part of Mexico. Today, the seventh and eighth generations of Shearer’s are continuing the family tradition of fine furniture. With the opening of Paine’s Patio and Nautical & Nice. Through all these years of growth and change, Paine’s Patio has strived to remain a most reliable source of top quality furniture."
The company continued to grow and by 1872:-
"Now 1872, Daniel Shearer and John Paine built the first block-size Paine store at Canal Street in Boston. This was to be the home of Paine Furniture Company for the next 44 years, during which time the company greatly expanded its manufacturing activity. After fifty years, even this building proved too small for the growing Paine operation. So by 1914, the store moved to a stunning large new ten-story showroom and manufactory on Arlington Street at Park Square. Like the furniture Paine’s sold, this new building was beautiful, impressive and unique- a place Bostonians enjoyed visiting for well over 75 years."
Arguably the most famous Boston Furniture comes from John and Thomas Seymour they first settled in Portland, Maine. However in 1784, the Seymours relocated to Boston in 1793, arriving in the thriving city at an opportune moment in history. The changing social landscape, shifting social roles, new leisure activities, and a growing number of wealthy individuals in Boston led to larger houses and as a result a demand for higher quality furniture and new forms, including sewing tables, ladies' desks, sideboards, and lap desks. The increased wealth and foreign trade also secured a consistent supply of the exotic and rare woods and veneers, such as mahogany and rosewood ,prevalent in the Seymours' designs.
